Goodbye to SARS?
"非典"并非不可战胜,中国科学家下个月将进行疫苗人体试验

DO you remember what it was like when SARS hit China? Schools were closed, there were few people on the bus, and everyone wore face masks (口罩).

Well, you may never have to experience such things again. The Chinese Government will start testing a SARS vaccine on people next month!

The vaccine is made of dead SARS cells (细胞).

As the cells are dead they can be put into somebody without hurting them.

When the cells are put into someone, their body will make antibodies (抗体) to fight (对抗) the disease.

This means that if they ever get SARS in the future, their body will be able to fight it.

From monkeys to men

The Government started work on the vaccine in April. It has had to go through many tests to make sure it is safe.

On October 13, scientists started testing the vaccine on animals. They gave the vaccine to 18 healthy monkeys.

Two weeks later, they gave the monkeys SARS.

But none of the monkeys died! All of them lived because of the use of the vaccine.

Now it is time for the vaccine to be tested on people.

Such tests usually have three steps. The vaccine is first tested on a small number of people, about 200. By the third step, it is being tested on 1,000 people!

The Government will look for people to test the vaccine next month. They will look for people in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Anyone can test the vaccine if they are healthy and below 65. Old people can't test it as they die easily of SARS.

SARS has killed 774 in the world since April this year. Over 8,000 people got the disease during that time.
